Just what a bread should be like, and quite healthy as well as tasty. I used unsweetened applesauce and exact amounts of ingredients (2.5 teaspoons yeast since I had a jar, not packages). Give this a try!-27 Nov 2003

MMMM Smells like oatmeal cookies when baking. Very good, lightly sweet bread. Don't really taste the applesauce, but still very good and moist! I am making another loaf tonight. Followed the recipe exactly.-25 May 2008

This is a great recipe!I used apple juice instead of water. No sugar but a tablespoon of molasses. 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup oats. Is so yummy. I also tried it with putting a cinnamon swirl in the bread by rolling it out into a rectangle, putting just a little bit of applesauce on it and sprinkling a brown sugar/cinnamon mix on it, rolling it up short end, sealing it with a little water and put in the bread pan seal side down. This past week has been absolutely crazy at my house. Sick kids, big deadlines, laundry piled up to the ceiling, dirty diapers overflowing the garbage cans, the dishes stacked to heaven in the sink.

We have a lot of exciting stuff going on with Six Sisters’ Stuff and even more exciting things with our cookbook (which is now an Amazon #1 Bestseller).

I had so many things that I needed to do for the blog and other projects that my kids ended up watching more television than usual.

I saw this cute quote on Pinterest:

“When in doubt, choose the kids. There will be plenty of time later to choose the work.”

The next day was all about the kids. We played together, read books together, and made these cookies together. I didn’t turn on the blasted computer once all day long (which is seriously a record for me, since the blog has been crazy busy lately).

They are my everything and I have to show them that.

So, if you need a way to spend time with your kids, baking together in the kitchen is a good place to start. And you can never go wrong with applesauce cookies.

These cookies are delicious and a little more healthy than a lot of other cookie recipes. They are full of applesauce, and seriously taste amazing.


Glazed Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bread


My mom is one of my best taste testers. She’s pretty good about being honest with me, and I’ve even got a few “not my favorite” or “little too sweet for me” when I have brought something over for her to try.

We all need those people in our lives, right? The kind of friend who will tell you when your eyebrows need attention, or you have basil in your teeth. I promise I’ll be the first to tell you if you ever fit into either of these categories, okay?

Because the applesauce I used to make this amazing Glazed Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bread came from my mom which she made from her very own apple tree, I really wanted to give her some of this bread to try. So I ran some over (she lives 2 minutes away from me). After she tasted it, she said, “This is OUTSTANDING!”

So there you go, it’s mom approved. And yes, it is apple picking time here. We are seasonally confused here in sunny old AZ.

You’ll looove the glaze we’ve got going on here. I completely ADORE glazes on sweet breads. Keeps them so moist and just really takes them to the next level of yummy-liciousness. I just checked and that’s not a real word, unless you hyphenate it… so we’re good!

Whether it’s truly apple season or not, if you have access to some tart Granny Smith apples, try making homemade applesauce. Serve some with dinner and then use the extra to make this bread!

Here is a great recipe for Homemade Applesauce. I like to make it in the crockpot on low for about 6 hours. I use an immersion blender to make it smooth!

I have also made this bread with store-bought applesauce and it still tastes good, but lacks a little bit of the apple flavor that comes from using tart apples to make homemade applesauce.

Homemade applesauce will usually be thicker than store-bought, so you may need to add just a bit more flour if your applesauce has more moisture. The homemade applesauce I used had more of scoop-able consistency rather than a pourable consistency.

Typically if you are going to be making an apple bread, you would need to cut and cook up some apples which can be time consuming. But if you use a chunky applesauce, you get a tasty bread that has a nice texture.

My kids helped out with various parts of the baking process from mixing to eating. My daughter took her job to measure the apple sauce very seriously. We used 1 ½ cups of the apple sauce which kept the bread from being dry, while giving it a delicious apple taste.

After combining all the ingredients, my daughter helped me pour them into a loaf pan. Then we topped the apple bread batter with some brown sugar before popping it in the oven. The brown sugar results in a crunchy, caramelized topping.

This apple bread smells amazing while baking. Drawn in by the yummy scent, my kids kept running into the kitchen, asking if it was ready.

Finally it was time! I usually slather some butter on banana bread, but this apple bread was so soft, spongy and moist because of the apple sauce, that no butter was necessary.

My kids starting gobbling up the apple bread as soon as it had sufficiently cooled. Our apple bread lasted just one day before it was all gone. I can't guarantee how long your apple bread made with apple sauce will last, but I know it will be delicious!

How to Store Apple Bread

Day 1-2: I like to place cooled apple bread back into the loaf pan and keep covered with a towel on the counter. Sliced bread dries out faster.

Day 3-5: If you have any bread left at this point, refrigerate it tightly wrapped in plastic or in a plastic bag.

Freezing: Freeze baked and cooled bread in a plastic bag for up to 3 months. Thaw on a counter for 3-4 hours. Again, it’s better to freeze apple bread loaf whole and not sliced.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Fresh apple simmered into this oatmeal lends a natural sweetness so you don’t have to add extra sugar. Sprinkling cinnamon on at the end instead of cooking it in gives the oatmeal a bright spice flavor that mellows with the residual heat of the porridge.

Combine the oats, salt and 1¼ cups cold water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, core the apple and thinly slice half and dice the other half.

Stir the diced apple into the oats and continue cooking until the apple has softened but the pieces hold their shape and the oats are tender and the mixture creamy, 3 to 5 minutes. Season to taste with salt. Transfer to a bowl, sprinkle the cinnamon on top and garnish with the apple slices. Serve hot.

Cardamom Apple Oatmeal: Substitute ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom for cinnamon or add it in addition to the cinnamon.

Walnut Apple Oatmeal: Sprinkle 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts on top of the oatmeal before serving.

Apple-Cranberry Oatmeal Breakfast Bread

Adapted from a recipe by Dorie Greenspan

1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

1 1/4 cups unsweetened applesauce

1/3 cup flavorless oil, such as canola or safflower

1/4 cup buttermilk or whole milk (I’ve also used plain yogurt with good results)

1 1/4 cups all-purpose or white whole wheat flour

1/2 cup dried figs, apples, apricots, cranberries and/or raisins (I used cranberries and raisins)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan, and tap out the excess flour.

In a small bowl, use your fingers to toss together the streusel topping ingredients (brown sugar, walnuts, and cinnamon.) Set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, applesauce, oil and buttermilk (or milk or yogurt) until they’re well blended.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and cloves. Stir in the oats.

In a separate small bowl, toss the dried fruit with 1/2 tsp of the flour mixture, just to coat. Set aside.

Pour the liquid ingredients over the flour mixture in the large bowl, and fold with a spatula just until they’re combined (try not to overmix.) Fold in the dried fruit, just until distributed throughout the batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Scatter the streusel over the top, and lightly press it onto the surface of the batter with your fingers. Place the loaf pan on a baking sheet (just so it’s easier to lift out of the oven when it’s done), and place in the oven. Bake for 50-60 minutes I usually take mine out around 50 minutes. You can check that it’s done by inserting a sharp knife in the middle of the bread no batter should stick to the knife.

Cool for about 10 minutes in the pan, then carefully run a knife around the edges of the pan and unmold the bread. Invert it back to right-side-up and cool it completely on a rack before you cut it.

This baked oatmeal transforms ordinary oatmeal into something special with fruit, nuts and a lightly sweetened custard.


  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant)
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, divided
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greasing the dish
  • 2 tart yet sweet baking apples, such as Honey Crisp, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch chunks (about 2 cups)


  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F . Grease an 8 or 9-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, 1/2 cup of the nuts, raisins, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, break up the eggs with a whisk then whisk in the milk and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Add the milk mixture to the oat mixture, along with the melted butter.
  5. Scatter the apples evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour the oatmeal mixture over top and spread evenly. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup nuts on top. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden and the oats are set. Serve warm or at room temperature.
  6. Freezer-Friendly Instructions: This dish can be frozen after baking, tightly covered, for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to serve it, defrost in the refrigerator for 24 hours then reheat it, covered with foil, in a 325°F oven until hot.
